Winchester is full of history from its founding through the Revolutionary War and right on through the Civil War.  One of Winchester's most unique claims to fame is that it changed hands 72 times during the Civil War.  You could go to bed in the South and wake up in the North, or visa versa.  Winchester tried to stay neutral Real Estate Winchester Virginiaduring the conflict, but it was predominately a Southern community.  Northern General Sherman once said, "All the men in Winchester are at war, and all the women are the devil."  It appears that some of the local women who were more Southern than Northern, would stand on the sidewalk and spit on the Union forces as the moved through town.  They were spunky.  There is a wonderful Civil War museum in the old courthouse that chronicles Winchester's role during the war.

George Washington had a surveying headquarters here.  Stonewall Jackson had a military headquarters here, as well.  Both locations still exist as museums.  Admiral Byrd, Daniel Morgan and many other famous historical figures lived or stayed in Winchester to add to its flair.
